A branch of Punjab National Bank (PNB) in Greater Noida, India, is suspected to have embezzled around Rs 35 crore. The incident came to light after customers who had deposited money in the bank did not find the money in their savings and fixed accounts.

Customers who have between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 4 lakh in savings accounts now have only Rs 16,000 left in their accounts. The money has also disappeared from the accounts of those who received Rs 1 crore and Rs 29,000 as government compensation. As many as 18 customers who faced similar problems have lodged a complaint with the police. A complaint has been registered at Beta-2 police station regarding the incident.

After the incident came to light, the bank’s regional office suspended five employees, including the branch manager. A new employee has been appointed in their place. The bank officials have assured that the customer’s money will be returned to the account by Thursday. However, it is not yet clear how the money went missing. It is being investigated whether the money was stolen from the bank, lost due to the mistake of the staff or the money was withdrawn through digital means.

The negligence and irregularities of the bank’s employees are also being investigated. The anti-corruption team is also investigating the matter. The bank has not yet made an official statement on the matter.

How did the event come out?

Vineet Bhati, who lives in Aichar village and runs a transport business, visited the PNB branch in Sector PI-1 on Tuesday. On the instructions of the branch manager, he signed the cheque and the necessary documents.

However, instead of sending the money to his savings account, he was transferred to another account. The source claimed that the account was said to be in Bhati’s name, but it was not actually his account.

After this, Bhati filed a complaint at the Beta-2 police station, demanding the return of his Rs 25 lakh and an investigation into the incident.
