The World Bank has raised India’s economic growth forecast for the current fiscal year to 6.6 percent from 6.3 percent. The World Bank has estimated that India’s economic growth rate will be stronger than expected due to strong domestic demand and the latest free trade agreements. According to the World Bank, India will continue to be the main engine of economic growth in South Asia. India’s economic growth is expected to increase from 7.1 percent in fiscal year 2025 to 7.6 percent in fiscal year 2026. The World Bank said that the main reason for this is strong domestic demand and resilience in exports.

Private consumption, in particular, has increased significantly. The World Bank report said that low inflation and restructuring of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate have helped increase the spending capacity of consumers.

However, the reduction in GST rates is expected to continue to support consumer demand in the first half of fiscal year 2027. The World Bank said that while global energy prices remain high, there is a risk that it will increase inflationary pressures and affect households’ disposable incomes.

The half-yearly Regional Economic Outlook report released by the World Bank Group has noted that India’s strong performance has been a key pillar of South Asia’s economic growth.
