The banking sector has been rocked after counterfeit notes worth crores of rupees were found in the secure currency chest of Punjab National Bank (PNB) in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Initially, fake notes worth Rs 7.40 crore (about Rs 11.84 crore) were found in India, but after further investigation, the amount was found to be around Rs 17 crore (Rs 27.20 crore).

The incident came to light when the bank counted the amount of about Rs 11.5 crore sent to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) chest in Jaipur and found that Rs 4 lakh 36,000 was less. After this, the bank started an internal investigation.

During the audit that began on August 9, 148 bundles of fake notes of Rs 500 denomination were found. Each bundle contained 1,000 notes. With further testing and counting, the total value of the counterfeit notes reached about Rs 270 million.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the genuine notes may have been taken out and replaced with fake ones. The CCTV footage inside the bank’s currency chest has also become an important basis of the investigation. According to the preliminary investigation of the police, the housekeeper Vishal Kumar, who works in the chest, is seen taking out the notes from the bundle of notes.

A case has been registered against three officials of the bank — Ravi Kumar Kansay, Sushil Sharma and Amit Kumar — in connection with the case. They have been suspended by the bank. A separate complaint has also been filed against housekeeper Vishal Kumar. They are being investigated under sections related to counterfeit currency, criminal breach of trust and cheating.

After the seriousness of the incident, the Uttar Pradesh Police has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT). Investigators are investigating where the fake notes came from, how the real notes came out and whether other employees were involved in the incident.

How did such a large amount of fake notes reach the bank’s safest? This question has now shaken the Indian banking sector.

Kathmandu.
