The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has kept the repo rate unchanged at 5.25 percent in the first bi-monthly monetary policy of the current fiscal year. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra has unanimously decided not to change the repo rate while maintaining a neutral monetary policy stance.

The Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) rate will remain at 5 percent while the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rate will remain at 5.50 percent. The committee chaired by Governor Malhotra has projected the economic growth rate to be 7.6 percent in the last fiscal year and 6.9 percent in the current fiscal year.

Likewise, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation is expected to be 4.6 percent in the current fiscal year. Malhotra said higher energy prices due to the conflict in the Middle East and a possible El Niño could put further pressure on inflation. Stating that the RBI has adopted a wait-and-watch policy in view of the changing situation, he said that the committee has decided to keep the policy rate unchanged after continuously assessing the balance of risks.

According to him, the conflict in the Middle East could affect economic growth by creating disruptions in energy, transportation, insurance costs and supply chains.

However, he said that the capacity of the Indian economy to withstand external shocks has increased as the fundamental indicators of the Indian economy are now stronger than in the past. He expressed the confidence that the steps taken by the government for export promotion and supply chain protection would help minimize the negative impact of the conflict.

Governor Malhotra said that the Indian rupee will depreciate more than the average of previous years in 2025-26 and the RBI’s policy on exchange rate has not changed. “The intervention in the foreign exchange market is focused on controlling excessive and volatile fluctuations and not on maintaining a fixed exchange rate,” he said.

Kathmandu.
