Incidents related to cheque bounce have been on the rise in recent years. The slowdown in economic activity, lack of financial discipline and increasing uncertainty in transactions have led to a significant increase in cheque bounce incidents.

Cheque bounce has been seen more in Nepal in recent years due to the widespread cheque payment in the business sector, real estate transactions, and small and medium enterprises.

Distrust among businessmen has been growing after cheques, which are used as a basis of trust in the banking system, have started failing.

According to Nepal Rastra Bank, there has been a significant increase in the number of complaints related to cheque bounce in recent months. Banks have also confirmed that there has been an increase in cases of legal proceedings due to cheques issued without sufficient reserves in their accounts.

According to analysts, the main reasons for this are cash crunch in the market, tightening credit flow, declining turnover and demand, and lack of discipline in individual and corporate finances. Once a cheque bounces, it is legally a punishable offense. If the concerned party files a complaint, it can be fine, ban on banking transactions and in some cases even imprisonment. This can have a negative impact on a person’s credit history, making it difficult to get a loan in the future.

According to legal practitioners, cases related to cheque bounce filed in court have also increased compared to the previous year. This has put more pressure on the justice system.

Meanwhile, banks and financial institutions have advised customers to be careful while issuing cheques, ensure adequate balance in their accounts and be attracted towards digital payment systems. Despite the increase in the use of digital transactions, the traditional cheque system has not yet been fully replaced. Economists say that unless the overall economy improves and liquidity eases in the market, the incidence of cheque bounce is unlikely. Therefore, the government and regulatory bodies need to intervene at the policy level to maintain financial stability. ‘

The increasing trend of cheque bounce is indicative of the pressures and risks in the financial system. If it is not controlled in time, it could lead to a massive financial crisis.

Kathmandu.
